The first name Ran means in Hebrew song of joy, sometimes a form of moving gladness. A short luminous word almost weightless. It was this name that Ran Gvili, aged 24, bore and whose path ended in noise and silence far from any joy in an anonymous cemetery in the northern Gaza Strip. The contrast is brutal a name associated with life and momentum and a death that occurred on one of the darkest days in contemporary Israeli history.
