On 27 January, UNESCO released a study which, at first glance, might appear to be yet another report on hatred and discrimination. Yet the document uncovers an unexpected fragility at the very heart of European education: a significant proportion of teachers are unable to recognise an antisemitic statement when it is presented to them. Drawing on responses from 2,030 teachers across all 27 member states of the European Union and spanning every academic discipline, the study sketches a landscape in which professed confidence coexists with a profound ignorance of the mechanisms of antisemitism.
